Explore the Ancient Mayan Ruins

Belize is a land rich with history, and one of the most captivating chapters of its past is written in the ancient Mayan ruins scattered across the country. During our trip, we had the chance to explore Altun Ha, a remarkable archaeological site just 50 km north of Belize City.

Getting There: A Scenic Drive Through Belize 🚗🌴

We picked up a rental car at the airport, eager to dive into our adventure. The drive to Altun Ha took about 40 minutes, offering glimpses of Belize’s lush landscape—palm trees swaying in the breeze, vibrant local communities, and the occasional wildlife darting across the road.

The entrance fee was a modest $10 BZD per person for non-citizens, a small price for the incredible history waiting to be discovered.

Stepping Back in Time: Discovering Altun Ha’s Ancient Wonders 🗺️✨

As we arrived, the first thing that struck us was the sheer grandeur of the site. Altun Ha was once a thriving Mayan city, serving as an important trading hub from 200-900 AD. The ruins are a testament to the architectural prowess of the Mayan civilization, with structures that have stood the test of time for over 2,000 years.

What We Saw and Explored:

  • The Temple of the Masonry Altars: One of the most iconic structures, this temple was once the site of religious ceremonies and rituals.
  • The Temple of the Sun God: A towering pyramid that offered breathtaking views of the surrounding jungle from the top.
  • Plaza A and Plaza B: Open spaces where ancient Mayans gathered for markets, ceremonies, and social events.
  • The Sacred Cenote: A natural sinkhole believed to have held spiritual significance for the Mayan people.
